クラウドが普及した市場で、生き残るエンジニアと組織 [ #opencloudjp ]

クラウドがもたらした変化は、技術的なものだけにとどまらない。IT企業の組織、そしてエンジニアに求められるスキルや性質が変わってきている。……筆者は、「オープンソース・ソフトウェア（OSS）コミュニティ」への貢献を推奨したい。OSSコミュニティは、さまざまな人々がノウハウを交換しており、まさにオープン・イノベーションを長く実践してきた実績を持つ。OSSコミュニティには、個人エンジニアだけではなく、IT企業も積極的に参加している。例えば、老舗のThe Linux Foundationには、国内から プラチナスポンサーとして富士通、NECが名を連ね、ゴールドスポンサーとして日立、ソニー、パナソニック、トヨタ、シルバースポンサーにはアシスト、CEC、デンソー、エプソン、NTT、NTTデータ、リコー、東芝といった企業が名を連ねている（参考 ）。筆者も複数のOSSコミュニティ活動のお手伝いをしている。日本企業に所属する人たちが、自律的な規範と行動原理モデルを身に付けるのに、OSSコミュニティは最適だ。

Mirantis Hosts Quarterly Meetup for Bay Area OpenStack Community [ #opencloudjp ]

Mirantis, an engineering services company delivering OpenStack expertise, is bringing Ray O’Brien, NASA CTO, Ken Pepple, director of cloud development at Internap, and Rodrigo Benzaquen, R&D director at MercadoLibre, eBay’s Latin American partner, to speak at the third quarterly meetup for the OpenStack community on December 14 at the Silicon Valley Cloud Center in Sunnyvale.

Apache Libcloud によるクラウド･スタンダードとは？

クラウド･コンピューティングの領域においてベンダー･ニュートラルなスタンダードの必要性を認識するために、Apache Software Foundation は最重要プロジェクトとして、Libcloud ユニファイド･クラウド･インターフェイスの作成を位置づけると水曜日（5/25）に発表した。Apache Libcloud とは、20 種類以上のクラウド･サービスにシングル･インターフェイスを提供するものであり、その対象としては Amazon EC2 (Elastic Cloud Compute) および、Rackspace Cloud、Terremark Cloud Service、IBM Cloud、GoGrid Infrastructure Service、Xen-based Linode Service などが含まれる。

GigaSpaces OpenStack Explained

One of the major concerns of many IT organizations is cloud vendor lock-in. This concern was expressed recently in “Banks fear cloud vendor lock-in,” from IT Wire:

The onset of cloud computing gives vendors the chance to lock customers in to their infrastructure, using proprietary protocols to ensure they’re on the monthly billing cycle as long as possible.

The OpenStack project emerged with a mission to address this concern by creating a community-led open source project enabling any organization to create and offer cloud computing services running on standard hardware.

GigaSpaces joined the OpenStack project with the mission to enable any organization to build its own Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), with its own choice of language and best-of-breed middleware stack.

In this post, I’ll try to provide more insight into our current and future plans around OpenStack, and more specifically our joint collaboration with the Citrix OpenCloud initiative.

注目のOpenStackプロジェクトの全体像 ～コミュニティーと主要コンポーネント

オープンソースのクラウド（IaaS：Infrastructure as a Service）基盤構築ソフトウェアは、国産も含めてかなりの数に上る。その中でも2010年7月に発表されたOpenStackは、突如現れたにもかかわらず本命の呼び声が高い。前編「注目のOpenStackプロジェクトの全体像」に引き続き、今回は開発コミュニティーの状況と今後のスケジュールおよびOpenStackを構成する主要コンポーネントの技術的な概要を解説する。

コミュニティーの状況

　前編で解説したように、OpenStackプロジェクトはOSSの開発プロジェクトとしては異例の充実した運営体制でスタートしたといえる。今回は2010年10月の第1版（Austin）リリース以後の開発コミュニティーの動向から紹介する。

OpenStack が前途多難な理由を説明しよう

今週（2010年7月下旬）のことだが、NASA 取り巻くいくつかのテクノロジー企業によるグループが、OpenStack への取り組みを開始した。 それは、大小の企業とサービス･プロバイダーのためのデザインされたオープンソース･プロジェクトであり、すでに証明されたクラウド･コンピューティング･プラットフォームのことでもある。 私自身としてはオープンな事象には大賛成であるが、GigaOM Pro の Weekly コラムの論評としては、天邪鬼な支持者と仲良くするのは困難であり、クラウドにおける主要なプロバイダーやソフトウェアベンダーににとって、OpenStack が本当のライバルになることはないと、指摘せざるを得ない。
