Dell は、VMware テクノロジー上で IaaS を立ち上げることにより、オフィシャルにクラウド･コンピューティング･プロバイダになった。 この動きは、Dell における 三分岐 IaaS アタックの第一弾となり、 Microsoft Windows Azure と OpenStack のプラットフォームも早急に取り込まれていく。 Dell は、そのフラッグシップ･サーバー・ビジネスに、強力なソフトウェア･プレイヤーを加えていくのに忙しい。しかし、その一方で、クラウドにおけるビジネス･モデルを、Dell は再構築しているようにも思われる。

HerokuがJava対応、過去の煩雑さとの決別うたう

Ruby向けPaaSとして成長してきたセールスフォース傘下のクラウドベンダ、Herokuは2011年8月26日、Java言語のパブリック・ベータサービス開始を発表した。7月にはNode.js（JavaScript）とClojure（JVM上のLisp方言）のサポートも開始しているため、Java言語は4番目の対応となる。Java対応は、これまで同様に「Cedar」（英語でヒマラヤ杉）と同社が呼ぶバージョンのソフトウェアスタックを用いる。現在のCedarのスペックは、

Ubuntu Server 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)
Ruby: MRI 1.9.2
Bundler: 1.1pre5
Node.js: 0.4.7
NPM: 1.0.6

となっている。ほかのHeroku対応言語と同様に、分散バージョン管理システムのGitを使ったデプロイが可能。ロギングやスケーリングについても、ほかの言語と同様の手法が使えるという。依存関係は、デプロイ時にHeroku側でMavenを使って自動解決される。アプリケーションサーバには、Google App Engineでも使われているオープンソースのJettyを使っているという。

Rackspace Readies OpenStack Training for Private Clouds

The OpenStack platform is evolving pretty rapidly, but there’s plenty left to do – like training. Companies looking to deploy OpenStack may have a hard time finding in-house talent or hiring folks with experience. To help pave the way for OpenStack growth, and to make a few bucks in the process, Rackspace has announced a global training program to get admins and developers up to speed. The OpenStack software training is five days and runs $3,000 per student. (For comparison, Red Hat’s one-day Cloud Architecture class runs about $1,600 per student.) The classes will be offered in Austin, Boston, London, and San Antonio in 2011. On-site classes for companies are also available, though pricing was not announced for the custom classes.

デル、クラウド環境向けマイクロサーバとOpenStackソリューションを発表

デルは8月24日、超高密度かつ省電力のクラウド・コンピューティング環境を実現する「Dell PowerEdge C5220 マイクロサーバ」を出荷開始した。同製品はCPUとして、1ソケット向けインテル Xeon プロセッサー E3-1200製品ファミリーを搭載している。公共・法人マーケティング本部 サーバ ブランド マネージャーの布谷恒和氏は、PowerEdge Cシリーズのポジショニングについて、「当社は2007年より、数万大規模のデータセンターに対し個々にフルカスタマイズして提供するDCSというビジネスを行っている。その導入例には、DCSマイクロソフトのBingやFacebookのデータセンターなどがある。DCSで得たノウハウを超数千台規模のサーバ向けに展開したものがPowerEdge Cシリーズとなる」と説明した。

デルがクラウド向け高密度サーバ、OpenStack導入支援も

デルは8月24日、クラウド構築に向けた高密度サーバの新機種を発表した。また、オープンソースのクラウド構築・運用ソフトウェアOpenStackの導入支援の活動についても説明した。　新製品「Dell PowerEdge C5220マイクロサーバ」は当初、欧州のあるサービスプロバイダのための専用モデルとして開発されたもの。ラック単位の電源容量が限定されているようなケースでも、少ないスペースで多数のサーバを動かしたいというニーズに応えている。　同サーバは3Uサイズのシャーシに、1ソケットサーバモジュール（同社は「スレッド」と呼んでいる）を複数挿す構成。8枚あるいは12枚のスレッドを搭載できる。すなわち、3Uのサイズで最大48コア（4 コア×12）を提供可能。

VMware’s open source doppelganger gets cloudy

Convirture – an outfit that has long offered tools for managing open source hypervisors – will soon release a new version of its (partially) open source software that also oversees the use of various “infrastructure clouds”, including Amazon EC2 as well as similar but private services based on platforms such as Eucalyptus and OpenStack. On Tuesday, the San Francisco-based company uncloaked ConVirt Enterprise Cloud, a super-set of its existing open source platform, ConVirt Open Source. Founder and CEO Arsalan Farooq tells The Register that this commercially licensed product will be released in September, pitching it as a way for enterprises to consolidate the use of their entire virtualized infrastructure – or at least large pieces of it – under one piece of software.

In the era of big data, when the technology spread across businesses in all industries collects and produces ever-increasing volumes of information, sophisticated storage and analytic capabilities are proving to be a competitive differentiator. After all, what good is an ocean of data if the firm doesn’t have the ability to store and process it?  To many observers, the answer is in the cloud. But within the rather broad framework of cloud computing, businesses face an array of obstacles. For the risk-averse, the public cloud model might not be a good fit. Then again, proprietary offerings from vendors like Microsoft or EMC can be costly and complex to deploy, and they can deliver more features than the client actually needs or wants. In addition, many firms simply aren’t in the position to build their own cloud configuration in-house.

NEC、OSSクラウド基盤「OpenStack」のコミュニティに参加

日本電気(NEC)は8月19日、オープンソースソフトウェア(OSS)のクラウド基盤ソフトウェア「OpenStack」の開発/普及を推進するコミュニティに参画することを発表した。OpenStackは、高信頼なプライベートクラウド基盤を低コストで実現するOSSベースのクラウド基盤ソフトウェア。コミュニティには、DELLやAMD、Intel、Cisco、Citrixなどの米国大手ITベンダーのほか、アメリカ航空宇宙局(NASA)やホスティング事業者のRackspaceといったユーザー企業も名を連ねている。日本の企業では、NTTデータやNTT、さらにはNTTドコモの米国研究拠点DOCOMO Innovationsなどが参加している。

Ubuntu 11.10 to support the Cloud Foundry Platform-as-a-Service

Canonical has announced that October’s Ubuntu 11.10, Oneric Ocelot, will now include VMware’s Cloud Foundry, the open source Platform-as-a-Service cloud environment. Cloud Foundry was launched in April and already supports Spring, Grails, Rails, Sinatra, Node.js and Scala applications. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) clouds offer environments for running applications adapted for the cloud, as opposed to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds, such as OpenStack and Amazon EC2, which offer a cloud of virtual machines on which to run operating systems and their applications. PaaS clouds offer APIs to resources such as databases which in turn allows the underlying cloud code to optimise and scale access to those resources.

Rackspace: OpenStack will drive future revenue

For the second quarter of 2011 Rackspace reported revenues of $247.2m (£151m), up 7.5 percent on the first quarter, and income of $17.6m, up 27 percent on the first quarter. On an earnings call its chief executive, Lanham Napier, stressed the importance of the OpenStack platform, of which Rackspace is a co-founder, for encouraging companies to create clouds and then sign up for Rackspace cloud services.

Open Cloud Initiative、オープンなクラウドコンピューティングを促進

OSCON 2011において、Open Cloud Initiative (OCI) が発表された。これは、ユーザがベンダーを選択し、望むときに別のベンダーに乗り換える自由のあるエコシステムを構築するために、ユーザとベンダーをまとめることを意図して設立された。OSCON 2011において、オープンなデータフォーマットとオープンなインターフェイスを通してオープンなクラウドコンピューティングを推進しようとする非営利団体、Open Cloud Initiative (OCI) が発表された。OCIは、1世紀以上も前に起こった発電機の利用から電力網の利用への変革になぞらえて、クラウドコンピューティングをソフトウェア製品の利用からソフトウェアサービスの利用への変革だと考えている。

OpenStackの大容量ストレージサービス、Swiftの仕組み

今回から2回にわたり、OpenStack ObjectStorage（Swift）の全体像と具体的な利用手順を紹介する。今回はSwiftの特徴、アーキテクチャ、利用するためのツールなどの全体的な紹介を行い、次回は具体的な利用手順について解説する。 Swiftを一言で説明すると、Amazon Simple Storage Service（Amazon S3）のようなオブジェクトストレージサービスを実現するオープンソースソフトウェア（OSS）だといえる。一般にオブジェクトストレージとは、通常のPC上のファイルなどとは違い、任意のアプリケーションで自由に読み書きすることはできないが、専用アプリケーションを用いて大容量データ（オブジェクト）を高速にアップロード／ダウンロードするのに最適化されたストレージサービスである。さまざまな用途が考えられるが、典型的なところではバックアップデータなど大容量データの格納に適している。

Dell Launches OpenStack Cloud Platform Solution

OpenStack is getting a big vote of confidence from Dell. Dell is launching new commercial support and services for the open source cloud computing platform. OpenStack started a year ago with code contributions from NASA and Rackspace and has since grown to more than 88 member companies, including Dell. The Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution includes a reference architecture based on Dell PowerEdge C Series servers and is intended to help rapidly deploy a cloud infrastructure.

ElasticStack wants to power your organization’s cloud

ElasticStack has been working on an open stack of software to help service providers and organizations start up their own clouds since 2008. The company has seen some success in Europe and recently (June 2010) entered the U.S. market. ElasticStack is offering a turnkey set of tools that includes a brandable control panel and billing system, cluster management API making it possible for customers to customize how an ElasticStack Cloud is seen by users and a KVM-based virtual server environment. In essence, all a service provider or large company needs to do is add their favorite industry standard systems, stir and they have their own cloud computing environment.

Why open source tools might need a hardware hook

The great things about open source software stacks such as OpenStack and Hadoop is that they’re free and they work. The not-so-great thing is that — like many open source projects — they can be difficult to configure and manage. Luckily, hardware vendors are stepping in to fill the void.  Dell has been particularly busy trying to take the hardware guesswork out of two of the hottest open source projects around: OpenStack and, on Thursday, Hadoop (technically, Cloudera’s distribution of Hadoop). Essentially, these are hardware configurations specifically designed to optimally run their respective software targets. Accompanying both is Crowbar, Dell’s open source software for deploying the software onto the hardware and then managing the existing system.
