イーベイ、自社開発環境に「OpenStack」を本格採用 ニシラのネットワーク仮想化技術と共に、将来的には導入規模拡大も [ #opencloudjp ]

ネット・オークション・サービス大手の米国eBayは8月6日、オープンソースのクラウド管理フレームワーク「OpenStack」を自社のアプリケーション開発環境に採用したことを明らかにした。IaaSプロバイダーのRackspaceが採用を発表したばかりのOpenStackだが、いよいよ著名な企業顧客もつかんだ。OpenStackを採用したいちばんの理由は、OpenStackが、Nicira Networksの提供するネットワーク仮想化プラットフォーム（NVP：Nicira Network Virtualization Platform）と統合されていることである。これにより、eBayは何百ものプロジェクトが必要とする仮想ネットワークを、オンデマンドに提供することができる。つい先日VMwareが買収を発表したNiciraは、OpenStackプロジェクトのネットワーク管理コンポーネント（開発コード：Quantum）における主要コントリビューターの1社である。また、eBayは従来からNiciraの主要顧客の1社として名を連ねていた。

OpenStack（オープンソース･クラウド･プロジェクト）は、Microsoft Hyper-V のコードが保守されていないとして、そのコア･モジュールから排除した。オープンソース･クラウド･プロジェクトである OpenStack は、Microsoft がサポートを怠っているという理由により、その IaaS フレームワークから Microsoft Hyper-V を排除しようとしている。  OpenStack は、言うまでもなく、クラウドを構築するソフトウェアである。

レッドハット、仮想化ソフトの最新版「RHEV 3.0」をリリース [ #opencloudjp ]

米国Red Hatは1月18日、同社の仮想化ソフトウェアの最新版となる「Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization（RHEV）3.0」の全世界での出荷を発表した。RHEV 3.0には、大規模な展開を支援するさまざまな強化機能やセルフプロビジョニング用の新しいコンソールなどが搭載されている。　IT専門の調査会社である米国IDCで、クラウドや仮想化を担当するアナリスト、ゲーリー・チェン（Gary Chen）氏は、RHEV 3.0では「KVM（Kernel-based Virtual Machine）」のエンタープライズ利用への対応が大きく前進しており、米国VMwareや米国Microsoftといった企業の広く使われている仮想化製品の有力な代替選択肢と考えられるだろうと述べている。

「仮想化分野のリーダーを目指す」――Red HatのLinux事業部門トップ、トットン氏 [ #opencloudjp ]

レッドハットは1月12日、同社の事業戦略に関する記者説明会を開催した。来日した米Red Hatのジム・トットン バイスプレジデント兼プラットフォーム事業部門長は「企業ITのあらゆる分野でオープンソースソフトウェア（OSS）の導入が進んでいる」とし、OSSに関する同社の取り組みを説明した。特に好調だというOS分野では、2011年12月6日にリリースしたRed Hat Enterprise Linux（RHEL）6.2の機能について説明した。トットン氏は「RHEL 6.2は単なるマイナーアップデートではなく、さまざまなアップデートが行われている」と話し、CPUの強化やID管理機能の強化をはじめとするアップデート点を紹介した。

VMware’s open source doppelganger gets cloudy

Convirture – an outfit that has long offered tools for managing open source hypervisors – will soon release a new version of its (partially) open source software that also oversees the use of various “infrastructure clouds”, including Amazon EC2 as well as similar but private services based on platforms such as Eucalyptus and OpenStack. On Tuesday, the San Francisco-based company uncloaked ConVirt Enterprise Cloud, a super-set of its existing open source platform, ConVirt Open Source. Founder and CEO Arsalan Farooq tells The Register that this commercially licensed product will be released in September, pitching it as a way for enterprises to consolidate the use of their entire virtualized infrastructure – or at least large pieces of it – under one piece of software.

Virtualisation is the key to security woes

While IT shops and vendors struggle to apply security practices to virtualised systems, a Start-up called Bromium claims it will turn the question on its head, using virtualisation to secure all types of devices.  The idea is that a hypervisor can isolate and protect applications, turning the platform into the security tool. Bromium has some big names, particularly from Citrix and the community around the Xen hypervisor. Bromium co-founder and CTO Simon Crosby, said the question of how to secure virtualised systems, as opposed to using virtualisation to secure everything else, is “a yawn in my view.”

VMware dominance to remain despite contest

Errol Rasit, principal research analyst at Gartner, labeled groups such as the Open Virtual Alliance (OVA), which include Red Hat, IBM, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Intel, and OpenStack, with notable members including Cisco Systems, Rackspace Hosting and Citrix, as “credible”. Competition from these coalitions, he noted in a phone interview, was “good for customers” in terms of lowering costs and offering choice. The OVA was announced on May 17, according to a report by ZDNet Asia’s sister site, ZDNet UK. It aims to make the open-source Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor the fundamental layer on which the cloud is virtualized, it stated.

Microsoft and Citrix Embrace Heterogeneity, VMware Hunkers Down

Most large enterprises have mixed operating system environments, running at least two of Windows, Linux and Unix. And in the future the same may be equally true when it comes to hypervisors: many enterprises could soon be using a combination of virtualization technologies, running at least one of Hyper-V, Xen or KVM in addition to VMware. Why? One reason is that many organizations are interested in cloud computing, and in particular setting up private clouds. Solutions built on OpenStack or Project Olympus — Citrix’s implementation of OpenStack — may well be more cost-effective than comparable VMware solutions.

昨日（10/21）、 OpenStack のフル･バージョンが利用できるようになった。 そして、今日（10/22）、とても大きな出来事があった。 つまり、この活動に、Microsoft が参加したのだ。少なくとも、間接的には、そう見える。。。 今回のオフィシャルな発表によると、Cloud.com が CloudStack で Hyper-V をサポートするための、テクニカルなガイダンスとアシストを Microsoft が提供する。 それが完了すると、 Cloud.com は、『 Windows Server 2008  R2 Hyper-V 上で OpenStack をサポートするためのコードを開発 』し、それを OpenStack コード･リポジトリに加えることになる。

オープンソース・クラウド基盤ソフト「OpenStack」がマイクロソフト「Hyper-V」をサポートへ

　米国Cloud.comは10月22日、Microsoftと協力し、オープンソース・プロジェクト「OpenStack」のソフトウェアとMicrosoftの仮想化技術「Hyper-V」に互換性を持たせることを明らかにした。
　OpenStackプロジェクトは、米国RackspaceとNASA（米国航空宇宙局）が7月、企業がデータやアプリケーションをクラウド間で容易に移動できるようにすることを目指して開始した。Rackspaceは、自社の従量制のオンデマンド・サーバ「Cloud Servers」とオンライン・ストレージ・サービス「Cloud Files」の基盤ソフトウェアのコードを寄贈しており、NASAは、同局のクラウド・プラットフォーム「Nebula」の基盤ソフトウェアを寄贈している。

OpenStackに対する、VMWareの反応： 同調しつつも、少し反論

Rackspaceの発表したOpenStackに対して、影響を大きく受けるベンダーもは誰か、と分析するに当たり、仮想化技術の独自仕様で市場の大きなシェアをもっているVMWareがあげられる。

Rackspaceは元々自社のクラウドインフラをCitrix のXenServerをベースに開発者しているため、Citrixとしては、OpenStackはVMWareに対向する切り札として位置付けている、と表明している。

対してVMWare社の反応はあまり明確なものが今のところ出ていない。今時点で明確になっているのは、Director of Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF)という役職にいるWinston Bumpus氏による下記のコメントである。
