NASAの前CTOがベンチャー設立、巨大プライベートクラウドをコモディティに

米Nebulaは27日、オープンソースソフトウェアとオープンソースハードウェアを使用し、プライベートクラウドの導入バリアーを大幅に引き下げ、一種のコモディティにするためのハードウェアアプライアンスの開発計画を発表した。このアプライアンスには、NASAなどで使用されているオープンソースクラウドプラットフォーム「OpenStack」や、米Facebookが高効率かつ安価なデータセンターを構築するために開始したオープンソースハードウェアプロジェクト「Open Compute」を採用する。

オープンなクラウド・サービスを認定する「Open Cloud Initiative」が発足

2009年に大枠が決まり、その後幾度となく暗礁に乗り上げながらも、7月26日、非営利団体「Open Cloud Initiative（OCI）」がついに正式結成へとこぎつけた。同イニシアチブはコミュニティ・ベースで運営され、「オープン・クラウド原則（OCP：Open Cloud Principles）」の採用促進に取り組む。　OCIで役員を務める米国Apigeeの戦略担当副社長、サム・ラムジ（Sam Ramji）氏は、「OCIは、クラウドを真にオープンなものにするための原則を定義し、提供していく」と説明する。「Open Cloud Principles」とは何かを記したドラフトがすでにリリースされており、これに対するコメントを30日間受け付けている。　「オープン・クラウドの構築」については、これまでにもさまざまな取り組みがなされてきた。だが、OCIはそれらのどの取り組みとも違う、とラムジ氏は述べる。

Dell は OpenStack を、Lotus 1-2-3 のように簡単にする！

Dell puffs up OpenStack clouds

Dell has announced an OpenStack-based suite of hardware, software, and services as the core of its new cloud-in-a-box strategy, and released a software tool, appropriately called Crowbar, to help its customers pry their way into their cloudy futures. Dell was once enamored with Canonical’s Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud for helping its customers build their own cloudy infrastructure on its PowerEdge-C dense and low-powered servers. UEC is based on the Eucalyptus cloud controller, but will be shifted to OpenStack at some point in the future. And predictably, Dell now has a crush on OpenStack, too. But this time, it isn’t counting on Canonical.

OpenStack’s Extended Family Continues To Innovate

Two of the core developers of OpenStack, the open-source cloud-computing platform that was launched last year by Rackspace and NASA, are seizing the opportunity they helped forge to create more cloud solutions for enterprises and find more success in the cloud computing industry.  Joshua McKenty and Christopher MacGown have co-founded Piston Cloud Computing, a software company that is developing commercialized OpenStack software for businesses. Piston’s software aims to extend the OpenStack solution to address security, performance and lifecycle management issues of hybrid cloud approaches. The company has been stealthy to date, but its blog says that its software “specializes on the federation of large, complex datasets that have regulatory requirements for authentication and access control.”

OpenStack’s First Birthday: A Year in Review

OpenStack, the open source cloud computing project initiated by NASA and Rackspace, celebrated its first birthday on July 19. OpenStack’s open source code enables customers to create public or private cloud environments that deliver functionality analogous to that provided by private Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) vendors such as Amazon Web Services, Joyent or Verizon Terremark. The OpenStack project began with the support of 25 companies but has grown significantly over the last year to the point where it now claims the backing of 80 companies that collectively offer financial and technical support to a staff of 217 developers. Current contributors include AMD, Canonical, Cisco, Dell, Intel and Citrix and start-ups such as Piston Cloud Computing and Nephoscale.

OpenStack turns 1. What’s next?

OpenStack, the open-source, cloud-computing software project founded by Rackspace and NASA, celebrates its first birthday tomorrow. It has been a busy year for the project, which appears to have grown much faster than even its founders expected it would. A year in, OpenStack is still picking up steam and looks not only like an open source alternative to Amazon Web Services and VMware vCloud in the public Infrastructure as a Service space, but also a democratizing force in the private-cloud software space.

OpenStack は商用化へ向けて準備を整える

Piston Cloud Computing は、True Ventures および、Hummer Winblad Venture Partners、Divergent Ventures などから  $4.5 million を得て立ち上がったところだが、まだ若い OpenStack プラットフォームにとっても、それは重要な事柄となる。 さらに同社は、OpenStack の基礎をなすコードの、一部を担うようになると、それらの出資者に期待されている。 Piston は、NASA Nebula クラウド･インフラストラクチャに携わった、アーキテクトの 1人により創られ、OpenStack のコンピューティング領域における基板を提供している。OpenStack とは、Rackspace と NASA が昨年に立ち上げた、オープンソース･クラウド･コンピューティング･プラットフォームのことである。 そこには、クラウド･コンピューティングの有名どころを含む、80 社以上が既に参加している。

シトリックスがCloud.com買収、OpenStackとの関係は？

米シトリックス・システムズは7月12日（米国時間）、Cloud.comを買収したと発表した。買収額は非公表。シトリックスはこれまでも、同社の関わるクラウド構築プロジェクトでクラウド運用ソフトウェアにCloud.comの「CloudStack」を使ってきた。シトリックスは今回の買収により、同社に欠けていたクラウド構築・運用／クラウド・オーケストレーションの部分で、実績のあるソフトウェアを有償の自社製品として即座に提供できるようになった。

米Citrix、クラウド基盤ソフトを手掛ける米Cloud.comを買収

米Citrix Systems（以下、Citrix）は12日（米国時間）、クラウド構築ソフトを提供する米Cloud.comの買収を完了したと発表した。買収金額などの条件は非公開。Cloud.comは、オープンソースのクラウド実装・管理ソリューション「CloudStack」を手掛ける非公開企業。CloudStackは、Amazon Web Services、Citrix、VMwareを初めとする既存インフラとのシームレスな統合できる点が特徴で、マルチテナント型プライベート/パブリッククラウドの、迅速な導入・管理・運用を行えるという。

米Citrix 社長兼CEOのテンプルトン氏が“3PC”戦略など説明

シトリックス・システムズ・ジャパン株式会社（以下、シトリックス）は7月7日、米Sitrix Systems 社長兼CEOのマーク テンプルトン氏の来日にともない、プレス向けのラウンドテーブルを開催した。テンプルトン氏は、5月に開催した「Citrix Synergy 2011 サンフランシスコ」で発表された、3つのクラウド“3PC”戦略や、「PC era to Cloud era（PCの時代からクラウドの時代へ）」への展開など、新たなコンセプトとあわせて、クラウドやデスクトップ仮想化への取り組みを説明した。

クラウド・コンピューティングの世界では、オープンソース・ソフトウェア・スタックの魅力がより鮮明になり、クラウド事業者であるラックスペース・ホスティングの「OpenStack」に対する関心とその導入機運が世界的に高まると思われる。実のところ、筆者は、ラックスペースのようなIT企業がオープンソース・プロジェクトを創設することには概して懐疑的である。というのも、その取り組みからは、『トム・ソーヤの冒険』のペンキ塗りのエピソードに似た“ずるさ”を感じることが多いからだ。

Virtualisation is the key to security woes

While IT shops and vendors struggle to apply security practices to virtualised systems, a Start-up called Bromium claims it will turn the question on its head, using virtualisation to secure all types of devices.  The idea is that a hypervisor can isolate and protect applications, turning the platform into the security tool. Bromium has some big names, particularly from Citrix and the community around the Xen hypervisor. Bromium co-founder and CTO Simon Crosby, said the question of how to secure virtualised systems, as opposed to using virtualisation to secure everything else, is “a yawn in my view.”
